Graham Platner, who is challenging incumbent Senator Susan Collins, is now under fire for a resurfaced Reddit post in which he described himself as “crudely atheist” and used openly offensive language toward core Christian beliefs. In the post, Platner mocked Jesus Christ as a “zombie” and referred to the Virgin Mary in crude and derogatory terms.
The comment dates back to 2012 and was made in response to a discussion about alleged religious pressure within the military. Platner, a veteran of both the Marine Corps and Army infantry, dismissed the claims while highlighting his own irreverent attitude toward religion during his service.
The account used to make the post has been linked to Platner, and while it has since been deleted, the comment itself remains accessible.
This is not the first time Platner’s past online activity has raised eyebrows. Previous posts attributed to him include references to labeling himself an “Antifa supersoldier,” controversial remarks about race and tipping, and statements advocating for the use of firearms to combat what he described as fascism.
He has also expressed strong criticism of law enforcement.
Adding to the controversy is a tattoo Platner once had on his chest, which closely resembled the Nazi SS Totenkopf symbol. After public backlash, he apologized and altered the tattoo, claiming he originally chose the design in 2007 while overseas because it “looked cool,” without understanding its historical significance.
Taken together, these incidents are fueling concerns among voters about Platner’s judgment, respect for others, and fitness for public office—especially in a state where faith, service, and personal responsibility remain deeply valued.
