Newsom’s Presidential Buzz Needs a Harsh Reality Check: Failed Policies Should Disqualify a National Run

California Governor Gavin Newsom is being touted in some liberal circles as the next Democratic standard-bearer for the White House — but anyone paying attention to his record should pause before anointing him a future president. Instead of delivering meaningful results for Californians, Newsom’s policies have often produced wasteful spending, worsening crises, and leadership failures that would be liabilities on the national stage.

One glaring example is CARE Court, Newsom’s flagship program aimed at addressing homelessness and mental illness. Promised as a solution that would get tens of thousands of struggling individuals the help they need, the program has instead spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars with almost no measurable success. According to conservative commentator Kevin Dalton, while Newsom boasted about enrolling about 50,000 people, the real number of individuals forced into treatment was tiny — reportedly only 22 people — despite the quarter-billion-dollar price tag.

This disconnect between promises and outcomes isn’t limited to CARE Court. California has been plagued by devastating wildfires that destroyed thousands of homes. Newsom’s critics point out that disaster recovery has been slow and bureaucratic, leaving families waiting for permits while development interests circle, trying to snap up land at depressed prices.

Homelessness, crime, and housing affordability remain major unresolved problems — a reality that undermines any pitch that Newsom’s leadership would translate well nationally. California consistently ranks among the worst states in the nation for unsheltered homelessness, violent crime in major cities, and high costs of living that push families to the brink.

Instead of addressing these persistent issues with clear, effective policies, Newsom often resorts to political rhetoric and media appearances that sound polished but deliver little substance for everyday residents. That’s why what might feel like “buzz” inside Washington and Hollywood should be tempered by a harsh reality check: successful administration of the nation’s most populous state requires practical solutions — not endless talking points. Before the country considers Newsom as a serious presidential contender, voters deserve accountability for the policies that shape real lives here at home.
