Targeted Family Shooting at RI Ice Rink Leaves Two Dead, Community Reeling

A peaceful afternoon at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island quickly turned into a nightmare on Monday when a man opened fire during a youth hockey game, killing two of his own family members and injuring others before taking his own life.

Police have identified the suspect as 56-year-old Robert Dorgan, who also used the name Roberta Esposito and was attending the event to watch a relative play. Officers say Dorgan shot and killed his ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan, at the rink, and their adult son, Aidan Dorgan, died later at the hospital. Three additional victims — including Rhonda’s parents and a family friend — were hospitalized in critical condition.
The violence unfolded around 2:30 p.m. during the hockey game, as players, parents and fans looked on. Authorities later confirmed the shooting was a targeted attack stemming from a family dispute, though police continue to investigate the motive.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as players and spectators scrambled for safety, diving for cover or fleeing the arena. In a moment of bravery, bystanders attempted to intervene and disarm the shooter, highlighting the courage of ordinary citizens caught in a horrific situation.

Despite these efforts, Dorgan was ultimately able to retrieve another weapon and ended his own life before police arrived. Authorities have emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to public safety and that the incident appears to be a familicide and murder-suicide, not a random act of violence.

Governor Dan McKee, Pawtucket’s mayor, and other officials have expressed sorrow over the tragedy, offering support and counseling resources to families and community members affected by the attack. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and local police, are reviewing video evidence and witness accounts as part of their ongoing investigation.

The heartbreaking incident has reignited national debate over public safety, mental health, and the measures needed to prevent such tragedies, especially in settings involving children and families. For many in Rhode Island and across the country, it serves as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences that can emerge from unresolved conflict and access to deadly weapons by individuals in crisis.
