It's Mamdani's Party Now — and the Establishment Has Nobody to Blame But Itself

The Democratic Party just ate itself alive in New York, and the party's own leaders are standing in the wreckage looking confused. They shouldn't be. They built this.

Three socialist candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani swept their congressional primaries Tuesday night, knocking out sitting Democratic incumbents who were supposed to be safe. Brad Lander beat five-term incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman. Claire Valdez won the 7th district. And Darializa Avila Chevalier — a woman who once posted about using the American flag as a napkin — beat Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat by nearly four points. He'd served five terms. He ran a major caucus. He lost.

That's the story. Let it sit for a second.

The American flag as a napkin. And she won. That's not a fluke. That's a message, deliberately sent, by Democratic primary voters in New York's 13th congressional district.

Now think about what the establishment has been telling you. For years, the ruling class Democrats — the Pelosi wing, the Clinton machine, the Obama-era operatives — have insisted that the real extremism in American politics was coming from the right. They said it on television every single night. They funded campaigns on it. They used it to raise money. The entire institutional apparatus of the party was built around the message that Republicans were dangerous radicals and Democrats were the sober, responsible adults.

Meanwhile, inside their own party, they were feeding a monster.

Mamdani ran for mayor of New York City as an open democratic socialist. He won. Then he immediately built a congressional machine to extend his influence. He endorsed three candidates. All three won. He is constitutionally ineligible to become president — he was born in Egypt — but he doesn't need to be president to reshape American politics. He just needs his people in Congress. He's getting them.

CNN's Van Jones — not a radical, one of the establishment left's most reliable commentators — went on air Tuesday night and said: "The left is on the march. Democratic Socialists are an insurgency. This is a serious movement." When Van Jones is saying that, you can believe it's true.

Trump called them the "dirt bag left." John Fetterman — one of the last Democrats willing to be honest about his own party — called them "Dumocrat Communists." Fetterman said war had been declared inside the Democratic Party. Brad Lander, fresh off his win over Goldman, went on television and said Democratic voters want a "reset on the U.S. relationship with Israel." He also questioned whether Fetterman was even still a Democrat. Fetterman isn't the one who needs to answer that question.

Ask yourself why the establishment is rattled.

They spent years cultivating the progressive base without ever taking its beliefs seriously. They thought they could harness the energy without owning the agenda. They were wrong. You can't tell people that democratic socialism is a legitimate governing philosophy for a decade, run candidates on Medicare for All and Green New Deals, and then act surprised when voters start electing actual democratic socialists.

The socialists didn't need to storm the gates. They just had to wait. And run. And win.

Here's what nobody in the mainstream press is going to tell you clearly: the Democratic Party that most of its own donors and consultants thought they were running no longer exists. The Clinton-Obama coalition — the professional, credentialed, corporate-adjacent wing of the party — has been losing internal fights for years. Tuesday night in New York, it lost three of them simultaneously.

Chevalier's win over Espaillat is the most telling. Espaillat is a Hispanic incumbent in a majority-Hispanic district. He ran the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. He had seniority. He had money. He lost to a woman the Washington Examiner described as a "Mamdani-backed socialist with history of anti-American rhetoric." She walked out of a live radio interview when she was asked about her old social media posts.

She's going to Congress.

The question now is whether Republicans have the sense to make every Democrat running in November own these candidates. Mamdani. Lander. Chevalier and the flag. Own every position they've taken, make every Democrat who refuses to denounce them defend that refusal. Not for a news cycle. For four straight months.

The material is there. It's not subtle. A congressional candidate who posted about using the American flag as a napkin just won a Democratic primary in New York City, with the explicit backing of the sitting mayor.

If Republicans can't do something with that, the problem isn't the Democrats.

It's them.
